A case of Poncet’s Arthritis: a rarest of disease, diagnosed & treated on time
By Dr. Shallu Verma in Metro Heart Institute with Multispecialty, Faridabad
A 32 YO male resident of Faridabad, presented to Dr Shallu Verma at Rheumatology Department with pain & swelling in multiple joints. The patient was already taking treatment at other private hospital for last 2 months but there was no improvement in the condition & relief. Severe joints pain & swelling didn’t allow the patient to move at all & few joints had got bent & non-aligned.
Post investigations, Dr Shallu Verma detected Tuberculosis in lymph nodes & diagnosed as Poncet’s Arthritis, which is a rare condition of reactive arthritis that develops in patient with active Tuberculosis (TB). Post complete course of treatment, patient is doing very well now, recovering rapidly with pain reduced to minimal.
Most patients suffering from Poncet’s Arthritis, reach hospital with painful & swelling joints with high ESR & CRP. The condition is usually misdiagnosed as inflammatory arthritis, leading to wrong treatment and almost no improvement in the condition.
