By Dr. Piyusha Kulshrestha in Cancer

There can be Life after Breast Cancer. The Prerequisite is Early Detection.”

Introduction: According to the WHO, nearly 1.30 million new cases of breast cancer are registered each year worldwide, resulting in approximately 458,000 deaths. In India, breast cancer accounts for 25 to 31% of all cancers in females over 40. Recent data published by TOI indicates that around 2,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

The ‘Pink Ribbon’ is the symbol for breast cancer awareness, chosen by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993.

Breast cancer occurs due to the uncontrolled growth of cells forming lumps within the breast, which can become life-threatening as they spread to other parts of the body.

Risk Factors of Breast Cancer:

  • Family History: Women with a mother or sister who had breast cancer are at a higher risk.
  • Breast Lumps: Non-cancerous lumps can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Oestrogen Exposure: Women who start their periods early or enter menopause late are at higher risk due to prolonged exposure to oestrogen.
  • Age: Elderly women are at greater risk.
  • Obesity: Obesity: Excess weight poses a significant risk factor.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Choices: High alcohol consumption, smoking, and a high-fat diet increase risk.

Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer:
