What is Ventricular Tachycardia?
Ventricular tachycardia, also known as V-tach or VT, is a condition characterized by a rapid heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers of the heart, known as the ventricles. Normally, the heart rhythm is controlled by the sinus node in the upper chamber, the atrium, which emits electrical signals to initiate each heartbeat. When this process is disrupted in the lower chambers, it causes an increase in the heart rate to over 100 beats per minute, resulting in ventricular tachycardia.
Types of Ventricular Tachycardia
Monomorphic VT: This is the most common type of VT, where the heart beats with a regular rhythm but at a faster rate. The QRS complexes appear similar on an electrocardiogram (ECG). It can be stable (when the patient is conscious) or unstable (when the patient is in serious distress).
Polymorphic VT: In this type, the QRS complexes vary in shape and amplitude. It can be associated with a normal or prolonged QT interval on the ECG and is often termed “Torsades de Pointes” when linked to a prolonged QT interval. Polymorphic VT can pose greater risks and is often linked to severe heart disease or abnormalities in electrolyte levels.
Sustained VT: VT that persists for more than 30 seconds. It often requires medical intervention to restore normal rhythm and presents noticeable symptoms.
Non-sustained VT: VT that lasts for less than 30 seconds and resolves spontaneously. While not immediately life-threatening, it can indicate underlying heart disease, prompting further investigation.
Idiopathic VT: VT occurring without apparent structural heart disease. Common types originate from the outflow tracts of the ventricles.
Causes of Ventricular Tachycardia
VT occurs when there is an abnormal heart rhythm in the ventricles. While a normal heart rate typically ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute, in VT, the heart rate often exceeds 100 beats per minute. Various heart-related factors may contribute, including:
