Inguinal Hernia Treatment in Noida & Delhi | Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgery Options

Inguinal hernia, also known as a groin hernia, occurs when intestines or fat from the abdomen protrude through the lower abdominal wall into the groin. This condition can develop in either the right or left inguinal canal and forms a sac-like structure around the hernia.

Inguinal Hernia Symptoms

Inguinal hernias often remain symptom-free or painless in the early stages. However, common symptoms include:

  1. Pain in the groin, especially during coughing or lifting heavy objects
  2. Heaviness in the groin
  3. Swollen scrotum
  4. A bulge in the area of the pubic bone

Causes of Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia can develop due to a weak area in the muscles & connective tissues of the lower abdominal wall. In infants, it can develop when the lining of the abdomen fails to close properly. In adults, it often results from a weak area in the inguinal canal wall that develops over time.

Types of Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal hernias can be categorized into the following types:

Direct Inguinal Hernia

This type commonly occurs in adult males as they age, typically due to weakened abdominal muscles from aging or trauma. Abdominal contents can protrude through the weakened area, forming a visible bulge.

Indirect Inguinal Hernia

These hernias are more common in infants and occur when the fetal inguinal canals do not close properly before birth.

Strangulated Inguinal Hernia

This severe condition occurs when an incarcerated intestine becomes stuck in the groin, cutting off blood flow. It requires emergency treatment.

Diagnosis of Inguinal Hernia

Diagnosis usually begins with a detailed review of the patient’s medical history, followed by a comprehensive physical examination. The doctor might request that you stand, cough, or apply pressure to help reveal the presence of a hernia, as these actions can make it more visible during the examination. Imaging tests, such as a CT scan, MRI, or abdominal ultrasound, may be recommended for further evaluation.

Inguinal Hernia Treatment

In most cases, surgery is the preferred and most effective treatment for inguinal hernias. The doctor will recommend a repair based on various factors, including age, size of the hernia, and overall health.

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

This minimally invasive procedure involves a small incision in the lower abdomen, through which a laparoscope—a thin, camera-equipped tube—is inserted. Using the live images as a guide, the surgeon repairs the hernia and strengthens the abdominal wall with surgical mesh.

Next-Generation Robotic Surgery

The SSI Mantra 3 robotic system enhances laparoscopic surgery by offering greater precision and improved safety. It provides a 3D view for better depth perception, reducing surgical time and improving accuracy. The open console design allows for close monitoring of patient parameters, while the robotic arms offer unmatched flexibility for precise alignment.

Risks of Inguinal Hernia

Untreated inguinal hernias can lead to complications, including enlargement and pressure on surrounding areas, such as the scrotum, causing pain and swelling. In severe cases, a strangulated hernia can cut off blood flow to the intestine, necessitating emergency laparoscopic surgery.

Recovery From Inguinal Hernia Operation

Laparoscopic & robotic surgeries are minimally invasive, allowing for quick recovery. Most patients are able to return to their regular activities within one to two days, without any dietary limitations. However, avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous activities is advised for a period. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a high-fiber diet and quitting smoking, is also recommended post-procedure.
